The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
The teams are also swapping 2025 sixth- and seventh-round picks.
Metcalf has agreed to a four-year, $132 million contract extension with Pittsburgh, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL.
The 27-year-old Metcalf requested a trade after six years with the Seahawks. Metcalf wanted a fresh start with a contender and to rework his deal. The Steelers have been to the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, while the Seahawks have been there just once in the past four.
Fantasy Impact: There are quite a few moving parts here.Â
First, there are the fantasy implications for Metcalf himself. At the time of this writing, it is unclear who will be quarterbacking the Steelers in 2025 and beyond. Until we find that out, it’s difficult to say what kind of impact that position will have on him. But he moves to an offense that figures to be more competitive for a more stable franchise.
Second, there’s the impact that Metcalf’s presence will have on George Pickens. I can’t imagine that pairing working out as both have combustible personalities and are alphas who demand the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pickens is traded or is allowed to walk after the season, given what they’re now paying Metcalf. From a fantasy perspective, until we know the quarterback, it’s hard to imagine enough food to go around for both receivers to eat, thus dropping Pickens’ stock considerably.
Finally, the departure of Metcalf — and of Tyler Lockett before him — leaves Jaxon Smith-Njigba as the lone receiver of the dynamic trio in Seattle. The Seahawks are rebuilding and I’d imagine them continuing to force feed JSN even though the defensive coverage ought to get tougher.
