Everyone Is Drafting QBs Early

4 min read

A quarterback run can make fantasy owners feel like they’re falling behind, especially when several QBs come off the board in rapid succession. But you don’t have to follow the crowd. If everyone is drafting quarterbacks early, the best response may be to let the run happen and take advantage of the value being created at other positions.

1. Don’t Panic #

The first rule when everyone starts drafting QBs is simple: don’t panic.

A quarterback run can make the remaining players at other positions look unusually appealing. Instead of reacting emotionally, look at the entire board and identify where the best value remains.

2. Check How Many QBs Are Already Gone #

The size of the run matters.

Ask yourself:

  • How many QBs have been drafted?
  • How many teams still need one?
  • How many quality QBs remain?
  • How many picks are there before your next selection?

A run of three QBs is very different from nearly every team drafting one.

3. Look at Your League Format #

The importance of quarterback depth depends heavily on your league settings.

1-QB Leagues

You can usually afford to wait because there are plenty of starting options.

Superflex Leagues

Quarterbacks are much more important, and allowing a major QB run to pass may leave you with a significant disadvantage.

Always adjust your response to the format.

4. Take Advantage of Falling RBs and WRs #

When fantasy owners are aggressively drafting QBs, valuable RBs and WRs may fall.

This can create opportunities to add:

  • High-volume WRs
  • Starting RBs
  • Breakout candidates
  • Strong FLEX options

Sometimes the QB run is actually helping your roster.

5. Check Your QB Tier #

Don’t just count quarterbacks. Look at the remaining quality.

If several QBs remain in a tier you like, there’s less reason to panic.

If only one QB remains before a significant drop-off, taking him becomes more reasonable.

Your tiers should tell you when the position is becoming scarce.

6. Don’t Draft a QB Just to Stop the Run #

One of the biggest draft mistakes is selecting a quarterback simply because everyone else is doing it.

Before joining the run, ask:

“Would I draft this QB if the previous picks had been RBs and WRs?”

If the answer is no, you may be chasing the draft rather than following your strategy.

7. Consider the Opportunity Cost #

Every QB pick means passing on another player.

Compare the remaining options at:

  • QB
  • RB
  • WR
  • TE

If the best remaining QB is only slightly better than the next QB but you’re passing on a major RB or WR value, waiting may be the better decision.

8. Know When to Join the Run #

Sometimes joining a QB run is the correct move.

Consider taking a QB if:

  • Your preferred tier is nearly gone
  • The remaining QBs have significant drop-offs
  • The QB provides a meaningful positional advantage
  • The draft cost still fits your rankings

The goal isn’t to avoid QB runs. It’s to join them when the value makes sense.

9. Use the Run to Plan Ahead #

A QB run can give you useful information about what other fantasy owners are likely to do next.

If several QBs have been drafted, some teams may have filled their quarterback position and shifted their attention elsewhere.

That could mean:

  • More RBs become available
  • More WRs remain available
  • Another position becomes easier to target

Use the draft room’s behavior to your advantage.

10. Stay With Your Draft Plan #

Don’t abandon your strategy just because the room is behaving differently.

If your plan was to:

  • Wait on QB
  • Build around an elite RB
  • Start WR-heavy
  • Target an elite TE

you can still follow that strategy if the board supports it.

A positional run should change your decisions—not eliminate your strategy.

11. Know When Waiting Has Gone Too Far #

There is a difference between avoiding a QB run and ignoring quarterback entirely.

If your preferred QB tier is almost gone and the remaining options are significantly worse, it’s time to reconsider.

Don’t stubbornly wait just because you originally planned to draft QB late.

12. Trust the Value #

The best response to everyone drafting QBs early is to remain flexible.

If QB value is strong, draft one. If the position is becoming scarce, consider joining the run. If excellent RBs and WRs are falling, take advantage of them.

You don’t have to win the QB run. You just have to win your draft.

When everyone is drafting QBs early, fantasy owners should avoid panic and evaluate the remaining player tiers, league settings, and opportunity cost. In 1-QB leagues especially, a quarterback run can create excellent value at RB and WR. Stay flexible, trust your rankings, and only join the run when the remaining QB value justifies it.
